Dr. Christopher Luke – Physician
Dr. Christopher Luke is a board-certified physician currently working in urgent care. He is an HBCU alumni, graduating from Hampton University with his Bachelor of Science degree while majoring in Molecular Biology. He then received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at New York Medical College at St. Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers, NY.
Chris has always had an interest in studying medicine and recognizes that there is a strong need for more black doctors who are familiar with issues specific to African-Americans. “I realize that as a family medicine physician, I can have a much bigger impact on families directly in this role. I can help them navigate the entire medical system which is hella complicated and frustrating all while ensuring their medical needs are met,” says Chris.
The pandemic has really exacerbated the relationship issues between the medical field and people of color. “Many patients that I see are happy and relieved to see my face when I walk into the room. They feel safe and less skeptical of my advice and as a result, feel comfortable asking tough questions about COVID and the myths about the vaccine,” says Chris. “While other practitioners may get frustrated and not want to spend that extra time with patients to fully explain the importance of the vaccine and how the COVID-19 virus works, I make sure that I take that time – especially with patients who look like me. Understanding our community, knowing how to deliver key information (especially bad news) and recognizing how that information will be perceived is crucial to ensuring patients feel confident in their medical care.”
We need more black representation in the field! While it sounds shallow, its true! Black doctors have a major positive impact on black health overall!
